Wonderful Camping Fridge

Wonderful Camping Fridge
No complaints, so far. In the Summer of 2020, I built a long-envisioned camper conversion of my 1991 Toyota Previa van. As the primary feature, I wanted a full-length double bed, at the foot of which would be positioned a camping kitchenette. With this layout, along the style of vintage teardrop trailers, the cook stands outside beneath the raised tailgate. Once the bed was in place, very little space remained between the foot of the bed and the tailgate. However, it was just enough space for a kitchen counter with camp stove, food drawers, 5-gallon water jug, and the Joy Tutus 26-quart 12-volt refrigerator. After considerable Internet searching, I chose this particular refrigerator based on three qualifications: price, performance, and dimensions. The dimensions were critical, as the refrigerator had to fit within a specific, very tight space. So size was the starting point of my search for an appropriate unit. From there, price was my next consideration. One can easily spend $700 or more for a 12-volt refrigerator. But is that really necessary? After doing a lot of online product comparisons, it became pretty clear to me that one DOESN'T have to spend a small fortune for a reliable, portable refrigerator. So I confined my search to the low-price end, focusing then on reliability scores and appliance appearance, or style. And the Winner is.... in my assessment.... the Joy Tutus 12-volt refrigerator. Some reviewers gave reduced scores for a lid that doesn't seal properly (mine works absolutely fine), or the fact that the side handles are recessed and not particularly suited to carrying the unit any distance. This latter complaint may well be valid, depending upon intended use. But in my own case, I NEEDED recessed handles, as protruding handles would have prevented fitting the unit within the tight confines of my camper conversion. The only time I used the handles was when I placed the fridge into its fixed position. They haven't been touched, or needed, since. For built-in use, the Joy Tutus is ideal; no handles extend to interfere with adjacent, built-in features. Other reviewers have complained about noise when the unit's in operation. My own unit is very quiet; almost inaudible. It can be heard, if you listen closely. But it's not anything to interfere with sleep. And performance is excellent. If set to do so, it will freeze food solid. But I use it just to refrigerate, setting the digital thermostat to around 34 degrees, finding that nothing freezes, but everything stays as cold as if from a home refrigerator. Battery drain is minimal. I run my LED camping lights and this fridge off of two, 12-volt deep cell batteries, connected in parallel -- camping in 3-to-4-day stints. When I get home, only about a half-hour of charging tops-off the batteries. So the fridge uses very little "juice" and a dual, deep cell battery bank is probably overkill, in terms of reserve capacity. Besides performance and dimensions, what sold me on this particular 12-volt appliance was its appearance. The real thing looks just like the posted images on Amazon. It arrived extremely well-packed, and was received without damage. The finish is unblemished and of high gloss. I find myself being very protective of it, wanting to preserve its like-new, quality appearance. Of course, nothing's perfect. My only demerits for this product are the instructions (poorly written, clearly by a non-English speaker); and the manufacturer's name (I'm OK with "Joy" -- but what the heck is a "Tutus"?). Oh, well, these are not serious concerns. The instructions can be deciphered, by reading between the lines. And the manufacturer, as if to recognize the deficiencies of the written instructions, has placed a very helpful overlay directly on the fridge's control panel. The overlay clearly shows you how to operate the unit. As for the fridge's name: in my opinion, it's a bit odd -- but not enough to detract from what I believe should be the product's 5-star rating. If the quart capacity meets your needs, I highly recommend giving this portable refrigerator serious consideration. In my own experience, its quality has proven to be excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a cheaper portable refrigerator/freezer
Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2020
I bought the JoyTutus 26qt portable refrigerator to augment my freezer capabilities on my boat. It does cool down fairly quickly when empty (about as stated in the listing) and can get to freezer temperatures (5 degrees F or less). When running as a freezer it does cause some condensation on the outer walls of the freezer, so the insulation could be better. The fit and finish are OK for a cheaper cooler, but the lid on the unit I have seems to have a bit of a curve and the seal around the lid has about a 2 inch strip in front that ices up...indicating the seal isn't making contact in that area. It is nice that it will fit an American half gallon or gallon milk jug standing up. When the cooler was in a location where it was 80 degrees F outside, it seemed to struggle to get much below -4F even on Max setting. A thermometer centered inside the unit shows temperatures 5~7 degrees higher than what the unit says, but this is to be expected in a cold-plate style [no air circulation fan] refrigerator (a non-contact thermometer showed the same temperature as the display when aimed at the cooling plate along the inner wall adjacent to the compressor...where I expect the internal thermometer is located). Once the cooler was stable at an indicated temperature of -1F (thermometer read 5F) with a quart jug of frozen water in the cooler, I unplugged the unit to see how long it would stay cold. After 1 hour, I turned on the unit for a few seconds and it indicated the internal temperature was 24F. Another hour later it was at 30F. 45 minutes later it was at 34F. I then opened the cooler and the thermometer read 40F. Not terrible, but again it indicates the insulation could be improved. The unit is quiet in operation. It sits just outside the berth in my boat and I cannot hear it run when in the berth. With any ambient noise, I have to put my ear up to the unit to hear if it is running. When running the unit on an 700AH battery bank, I did receive the E1 (low input voltage) error, but that was cleared by switching it from the "high" to "medium" battery protection setting. Using a KillAWatt meter with the AC adapter, I found the unit to use between 35 and 42 watts on Eco setting and 37 to 57 watts on Max setting when the compressor was running. On a 24 hour and 30 minute period, including initial cool down and other tests, I found the unit consumed 740 Watts of power (a little under 60 amps @ 12.5VDC) when used as a freezer set to -2F, but this number would likely be lower if plugged directly into DC power. It was able to keep ice for drinks frozen as well as a half gallon of ice cream at serving temperature for over a week. It would be nice if the lid seal was better and if it was a bit better insulated, but overall it is a decent option for 1/4 to 1/3 the price of the more name brand units.

Update:
I originally had it rated at 3 starts, but decided, given the price, that it may have been a bit harsh for the minor issues of the lid bow/seal and less than desired performance holding cold with the power off. Changed to 4 stars. Added picture showing ice at lip where seal isn't perfect (and a half gallon milk jug standing up inside).

After a longer test with the KillAWatt (72 hours) on Max setting, I found power consumption to be a bit lower: 1890 watts over 72.4 hours is 26.1 watt/hours. At 12.5vdc (~12v nominal in ~80% charged state) that would be 2.09 amp/hour or 50.2 amps/day. This was still measured using the AC power brick, so direct DC consumption is still likely lower.
